Implications of White Dwarf Galactic Halos
نویسندگان
چکیده
Motivated by recent measurements which suggest that roughly half the mass of the galactic halo may be in the form of white dwarfs, we study the implications of such a halo. We rst use current limits on the infrared background light and the galactic metallicity to constrain the allowed initial mass function (IMF) of the stellar population that produced the white dwarfs. The IMF must be sharply peaked about a characteristic mass scale MC 2:3M . Since only a fraction of the initial mass of a star is incorporated into the remnant white dwarf, we argue that the mass fraction of white dwarfs in the halo is likely to be 25% or less, and that 50% is an extreme upper limit. We use the IMF results to place corresponding constraints on the primordial initial conditions for star formation. The initial conditions must be much more homogeneous and skewed toward higher temperatures (Tgas 200 K) than the conditions which lead to the present day IMF. Next we determine the luminosity function of white dwarfs. By comparing this result with the observed luminosity function, we nd that the age of the halo population must be greater than 16 Gyr. Finally, we calculate the radiative signature of a white dwarf halo. This infrared background is very faint, but is potentially detectable with future observations. متن کاملPhotometric Properties of White Dwarf Dominated Halos
Using stellar population synthesis techniques, we explore the photometric signatures of white dwarf progenitor dominated galactic halos, in order to constrain the fraction of halo mass that may be locked-up in white dwarf stellar remnants. We first construct a 10 M⊙ stellar halo using the canonical Salpeter initial stellar mass distribution, and then allow for an additional component of lowand ...
متن کاملDynamical limits on galactic winds, halo machos and intergalactic globular clusters
We argue that any violent galactic winds following early epoch of star bursts would significantly weaken the potentials of galaxies, and leave lasting signatures such as a lowered dark halo density and preferentially radial/escaping orbits for halo tracers such as globular clusters. A galaxy is disintegrated if more than half of its dynamical mass is blown off. The presence of dense halos in ga...
متن کاملCooling Models for Old White Dwarfs
We present new white dwarf cooling models which incorporate an accurate outer boundary condition based on new opacity and detailed radiative transfer calculations. We find that helium atmosphere dwarfs cool considerably faster than has previously been claimed, while old hydrogen atmosphere dwarfs will deviate significantly from black body appearance. We use our new models to derive age limits f...
متن کاملOn the Formation of Extended Galactic Disks by Tidally Disrupted Dwarf Galaxies
We explore the possibility that extended disks, such as that recently discovered in M31, are the result of a single dwarf (10–10M⊙) satellite merger. We conduct N-body simulations of dwarf NFW halos with embedded spheriodal stellar components on co-planar, prograde orbits in a M31-like host galaxy. As the orbit decays due to dynamical friction and the system is disrupted, the stellar particles ...
